Background & objectives: The prevalence of oral and dental diseases tends to increase during pregnancy due to factors such as nausea and reduced oral hygiene practices, including infrequent toothbrush use. This study aimed to identify the key predictors of oral and dental health behavior among pregnant women in Bushehr in 2023 based on the theory of Planned Behavior (TPB).
Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 200 pregnant women who visited 10 health centers in Bushehr City in 2023, selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires designed based on TPB, measuring variables such as behavioral intention, perceived behavioral control, and knowledge. Statistical analysis was conducted using Pearson correlation tests, one-way ANOVA, and multiple linear regression.
Results: A significant relationship was found between oral and dental health behaviors and several variables, including occupation, education level, husband’s occupation, number of children, pregnancy history, family income, knowledge, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intention (p<0.05). Among these factors, knowledge emerged as the strongest predictor of oral and dental hygiene behavior.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that pregnant women in Bushehr exhibited inadequate oral and dental hygiene behaviors, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. Strengthening perceived behavioral control - through educational programs and preventive strategies - could improve oral health practices among pregnant women, which lead to better maternal and fetal health outcomes.
