Background & objectives: Health literacy plays a critical role in the adoption of preventive behaviors for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study aimed to examine the relationship between health literacy related to NAFLD and the stages of exercise behavior change among women.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Sanandaj, western Iran, in 2024. A total of 400 eligible women were recruited using simple random sampling method. Data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire, a validated 33-item health literacy questionnaire on NAFLD, and an assessment of exercise behavior change stages. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 26, uttilizing one-way ANOVA, chi-square test, t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficient.
Results: The mean age of participants was 33.68±9.58 years, with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 28.37±2.8. A total of 83% of participants reported no physical activity. In terms of health literacy levels, 92.8% had inadequate health literacy, 5.5% had insufficient health literacy, 1.7% had adequate health literacy, and none had optimal health literacy related to NAFLD. Women who had engaged in regular exercise for more than six months demonstrated a significantly higher mean health literacy score compared to those in earlier stages of exercise behavior change (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The findings indicate that health literacy related to NAFLD among women was generally poor, and the majority was physically inactive. Additionally, women who had maintained regular exercise for over six months exhibited significantly better health literacy regarding NAFLD.
