Instruction to Authors
The Journal of Health (JOH) is a peer-reviewed, quarterly publication by Ardabil University of Medical Sciences (ARUMS), Iran. Journal of Health is a scientific journal which publishes novel research results conducted by students and author researchers in all aspects of Health sciences including Public Health, Epidemiology of Disease, Maternal and Child Health, Educational Health, Health management, Occupational health, Environmental Health, Food Safety and hygiene, Health, Safety and Environment, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Pollution, Other related areas. This journal accepts original articles, review articles, systematic review, case reports, short communication, and letter to the editor. The journal publishes in Persian language with English abstract.
The following guidelines refer to the Journal requirements for receiving your manuscripts for possible publication. Complying with guidelines will expedite the process of evaluation and publication of the submitted manuscripts. Journal of Health regrets to reject those contributions that deviate from the Journal style. The Editorial Board of the journal, reserves the right to accept or reject the article in any stage and any time or delete a part of the text, tables or figures, if necessary.
Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has been read and approved by all authors. The submission of the manuscript by the authors means that the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to journal of health if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication. Statements in articles are the responsibility of the authors.
Preparation of Manuscripts
The manuscript has to be submitted online via our online submission service http://healthjournal.arums.ac.ir. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a covering letter to the Editor in Chief, signed by all authors, stating that the authors wish to have their paper evaluated for publication in the Journal of health and that no substantial part has been, or will be published elsewhere. Accepted manuscripts are published in the order of receipt of the final approved version, after review, revision. Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work.
Manuscripts submitted in Persian, should be type on one side of the A4 paper, with a font of B Nazanin size 12 double spaced with a margin of 2.5 cm all around the paper. English text should be submitted in Times New Roman font, 11 point type. Manuscript should be typed in Microsoft word 2003 or newer only. The manuscript should contain Running title (maximum 50 characters) in the top of each page. Original drawings of photos, tables and figures should be furnished together with the manuscripts.
Article types:
1) Original Research Articles: should be divided into the following sections: abstract, introduction, method, results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgements, conflicts of interest, and references. Contributions should not exceed 4000 words in length for research papers adopted from quantitative studies. The length of papers which include a qualitative research study can be just extended by a maximum of 5000 words for the main text (excluding the abstract, tables, figures, references, acknowledgements, contributions, and conflicts of interest). The number of references must be kept to a minimum, preferably not exceeding 40, and tables or figures not more than 5 in number.
2) Short Communication: are short reports of original research articles or the early results of interventions and are structurally like Original Research Articles. They do not exceed 2000 words in length and include at most 2 tables and 15 references.
3) Review Articles: consist of abstract, introduction, method, headings and subheadings (if required), discussion, conclusion, acknowledgements, co-authors contribution, conflicts of interest, and references. Articles bearing on updated topics conducted by proficient researches are more welcome. Review Articles comprise of 50-70 references, at least 3-5 of which are supporting literature on the same topic. The main text does not exceed 5000 words in length.
4) Systematic Review Articles: may appear in Meta Analysis or Meta synthesis format, and may lack any statistical analyses. They include the same sections as Original Research articles but are structured like Review Articles.
5) Case Reports: must have an abstract of 100 or fewer words, case report, discussion, acknowledgements, and references. The main text should not go beyond 2000 words in length, references not exceeding l0 in number, and figures (tables, graphs, charts) each 2 at the most, with the total not exceeding 3 in numbers.
6) Letters to Editor normally include no abstract, tables, or figures. References are not more than 5 in number and the main text does not include more than 1000 words.
The title page: The complete title of the manuscript, the name of all the authors with their highest qualifications, the department or institution to which they are affiliated, corresponding author address with, e-mail and Tel/Fax numbers.
The Abstract: All original articles must accompany with a structured abstract up to 250 words. It should be structured in Background and Aims, Methods, Results and Conclusion followed by 3 to 5 Keywords selected from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) (Free accessible from http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html). The English and Farsi versions of the abstract should have identical contents.
Introduction: This should summarize the purpose and the rationale for the study. It should neither review the subject extensively nor should it have data or conclusions of the study.
Method(s): This should include exact method or observation or experiment. If an apparatus is used, its manufacturer’s name and address should be given. Statistical method must be mentioned and specify any general computer program used. The measurement units used should be clearly mentioned.
Results: It should be presented in the form of text, tables and/or illustrations. The contents of the tables should not be all repeated in the text. Instead, a reference to the table number may be given. If it facilitates conveying the content to the reader, using sub-headings within some sections is allowed.
Discussion and/or Conclusion: This should emphasize the present findings and the variations or similarities with other works carried out in the field. The detailed data should not be repeated in the discussion again. Rather, emphasize the new and important aspects of the study and the conclusions that follow from them. Limitations of the study should be addressed where applicable. The conclusions and recommendations based upon the findings of the study must be stated in a separate section.
Acknowledgment: All contributors who do not meet the criteria for the authorship should be covered in the acknowledgment. Financial and material support should also be acknowledged. If the work is based on a thesis, it should be acknowledged clearly in this section.
References: In the text, reference citations should be typed inside parenthesis, e.g. (1). References should be numbered consecutively with Vancouver style. Please list the first three authors for each reference and then et al, unless there are six authors or fewer, in which case all authors should be listed. Provide full reference details (author (s), title, journal, year, volume, pages). Capitalize the first letter and all initials of authors’ names, the first letter of the title of the paper, and any proper nouns in the title. Journal names should be abbreviated as in the Index Medicus.
References should be structured as follows:

Tables: In limited numbers should be submitted with the captions placed above. Do not submit tables as photograph. Place explanatory matters in footnotes, not in the heading Figures: Should be in limited numbers, with high quality art work and mounted on separate pages. The captions should be placed below. The same data should not be presented in tables, figures and text, simultaneously.

Ethical considerations: Ethical considerations must be addressed in the Materials and Methods section. 1) Please state that informed consent was obtained from all human adult participants and from the parents or legal guardians of minors. Include the name of the appropriate institutional review board that approved the project. 2) Indicate in the text that the maintenance and care of experimental animals complies with National Institutes of Health guidelines for the humane use of laboratory animals, or those of your Institute or agency. 3) Please indicate the RCT registration number on IRCT or other valid registration systems. The ethical principles regarding experiments and researches should be based on Helsinki declaration and 26 codes of ethics in Islamic Republic of Iran.
Peer review process: All manuscripts are considered to be confidential. They are peer-reviewed by at least three anonymous reviewers in the field, asking them to complete the review within 30 days. Each reviewer should state his/her confidential comments to section editor and also the comments to authors. The reviewers asked to divide their comments to authors into major and minor comments. To make final decision, the comments of a section editor and at least two reviewers are required. The corresponding author is notified as soon as possible of the editor decision to accept, reject, or require modifications. If the manuscript is completely acceptable according to the criteria set forth in these instructions, it is scheduled for the next available issue.
Unsolicited manuscripts will be reviewed for publication with the following understanding that: They represent original work The paper, including its essential data, tables, and figures, has not been published elsewhere in whole or part, the paper neither was published already nor is being under review elsewhere.
Open Access Policy: Journal of Health provides open access to all of its electronic contents on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Such access is associated with increased readership and citation levels.
Conflicts of interest: Authors must acknowledge and declare any sources of funding and potential conflicting interest, such as receiving funds or fees by, or holding stocks and shares in, an organization that may profit or lose through publication of your paper. Declaring a competing interest will not lead to automatic rejection of the paper, but we would like to be made aware of it.
Page charges: There are no charges for publication in this Journal.
Copyright: Accepted manuscripts become the permanent property of the JOH and may not be reproduced, in whole or in part, without the written permission of the Editor.
Reprint: Three copies of the Journal will be provided to the corresponding author after the publication.
