Abstract:   (18 Views)
Background & objectives: Chronic illnesses, such as breast cancer, can lead to significant psychological and emotional challenges, adversely affecting both mental health and social functioning. This study investigated the impact of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on self-conscious emotions-such as guilt and shame-and self-compassion among married women diagnosed with breast cancer in Ardabil.
Methods: A quasi-experimental design was employed, including pre-test, post-test, and follow-up assessments with an unequal control group. The study population consisted of married women in Ardabil who had undergone modified radical mastectomy and were attending follow-up appointments in April 2024. Thirty-nine participants were randomly assigned to either the trial group (n=19) or the control group (n=20) through simple random sampling. The trial group participated in eight 75-minute ACT sessions. Data were collected using the Guilt and Shame Proneness Scale and the Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form. Statistical analyses were performed using repeated measures ANCOVA in SPSS-22.
Results: ACT significantly reduced self-conscious emotions and increased self-compassion in the trial group compared to the control group (p<0.01). These improvements remained stable during the follow-up phase (p<0.05; p<0.01), indicating the lasting effectiveness of the intervention.
Conclusion: The findings highlight the therapeutic value of ACT in alleviating negative self-conscious emotions and promoting self-compassion among married women coping with breast cancer. These results provide practical implications for mental health professionals seeking evidence-based interventions to enhance emotional resilience in oncology settings.
